What is Something You Spend 1/3rd of Your Life Doing?
Sleeping. We spend so much of our time sleeping and it is incredibly important (as you will soon find out) yet for some reason, we don’t give it the attention it deserves.
Even worse there are many of us who will brag about how little we sleep, it’s seen as almost a sign of strength when really it’s one of the biggest contributors to mental and physical well-being. Hopefully, this post will begin to change that!
Yes Sleep Will Make You Smarter
A good night's sleep helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms. It can also improve the cognitive functions we all strive to increase. Memory, creativity, and decision-making all benefit from good sleep.
According to a study by the American Psychological Association, sleep-deprived individuals are more likely to experience negative moods and exhibit more significant emotional reactivity to stressful events. Not the best formula for a positive mindset!
If you are more of a visual, comic-orientated learner then check out Shai Marcu explaining it in this Ted-Ed video! Where they go deep into why sleeping is good for the brain!
Sleeping is Actually MORE Productive
This is talked about in the above video but when you get a good night's sleep, you wake up feeling refreshed and energized, which can improve your productivity during the day. Studies have shown that sleep-deprived individuals are more likely to experience difficulties concentrating, making decisions, and completing tasks.
Lacking Physical Energy? You Guessed It! Sleep more.
On top of all the mental benefits, a good night's sleep can help reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. It can also boost our immune system and help us fight off infections. Even Queen B thinks it’s the best!
“Having peace, happiness, and healthiness is my definition of beauty. And you can’t have any of that without sleep.” – Beyonce
And It Doesn’t Stop There!
Good sleeping habits can improve your overall sense of well-being. When you are well-rested, you are more likely to experience positive emotions and have better relationships with others. If you’ve been following this newsletter for a bit you know how important that is!
So, How Do You Get It
By incorporating these actionable tips into your daily routine, you can start developing good sleeping habits and enjoy the benefits of a good night's sleep.
Avoid using electronic devices an hour before bedtime - The blue light emitted by these devices can interfere with your circadian rhythm. Instead, read a book or take a warm bath to help you unwind. BONUS TIP - I recently bought a sunrise alarm clock and no keep my phone OUTSIDE my bedroom.
Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. - This can help regulate your body's internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up in the morning.
Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and improve the quality of your sleep. - However, avoid exercising close to bedtime, as it can make it harder to fall asleep.
Create a sleep-conducive environment. - Make sure your bedroom is cool, quiet, and dark. Use blackout curtains or a sleep mask if necessary, and invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows.
