đ¶ I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends đ¶
You and the vast majority of the world have probably felt a lack of social interaction over the last few years. Covid - 19 had a dramatic impact not only on peopleâs physical health but also on their mental health as well. Thankfully, it happened in 2020, when the ability to video chat and connection with those we loved online was far superior to what it would have been two decades ago.
We really did get by with a little help from our friends and those we love.
What About When There Is Not A Global Pandemic
It doesnât need to be something as drastic as a global virus to make you aware of and take advantage of the incredible power of relationships.
You will go through trying times and challenges, and thatâs ok. Itâs good, it can be healthy, and it can be the best source of learning around. But one of the biggest (scientifically proven) factors contributing to getting through these challenges is the quality of the relationships in your life. Having people that support you, guide you, grieve with you, celebrate with you, and are there for you, is linked to 100âs of health benefits.
But donât take it from some nutcase newsletter writer (me). Robert Waldinger is the Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. Which has followed men through 75 years of life! Itâs one of the most comprehensive studies EVER done on what makes us happy and healthy. Just listen to what he has to say!
Relationships Are Hard, Tho!
Are they? Are they really? Like everything, they can be far more straightforward than you think. As a member of the human race, you and all of us share a similar desire. You want to be loved, you want to be heard, and you want to feel needed. Knowing this makes relationships more manageable. Here are some quick tips to both create and nurture relationships.
Most of us are also nervous about meeting someone new. - You are on a similar field as the other random person at the party. So be the one to throw the ball!
Send a simple short message to someone when they pop into your head. - Itâs 2022, and we are blessed with devices that let us message someone instantly! So next time you think of someone, send them a voice or text message. Donât make it complicated. Just a âHey, you popped into my head today! Hope you are doing well!â
Remember that these things take time, and thatâs ok! - In this fast past world, you are getting increasingly used to getting things quickly. Amazon deliveries, fresh groceries, running water and entertainment at a click. Relationships take time, though, donât feel let down if it takes a few months, encounters and missed plans to begin forming a friendship. The best things really do take time.

But Itâs Not Just Our Relationship With Each Other
So now youâve seen the power of strong and healthy relationships with others. But what about you? What does your relationship with yourself look like?
Unfortunately, this is an area that so often gets overlooked. You pay attention to the way you talk to and treat others. But when was the last time you looked at how you talk and treat yourself?
I believe self-reflection is one of the most powerful tools, and one of the most critical steps on that journey is being aware of how you interact with the most important person. YOU. Here is one of my favourite rules to remember when talking to yourself. (Itâs okay. We all talk to ourselves!)
Next time you find yourself saying things like âThat was stupidâ or âCanât believe I did that, you idiotâ. Ask yourself this. Would you talk to someone you loved like that if they had done the same thing? You are probably far too harsh with yourself. And those words have powerful ramifications for your subconscious.

A Rabbit Hole Of More Information
As always, I want to leave you with more places to go! Of course, you can dig into my podcast, but also check out some incredible inspiration for this newsletter!
âThe Happiness Advantageâ - Shawn Anchor. Iâm almost done with what is sure to be the first of many reads through this phenomenal book! I cannot suggest it enough. If you love the science and practicality of things, this is not to be missed!
âHow To Win Friends And Influence Peopleâ - Dale Carnegie. While the initial name of this book puts some people off, I think it should be titled âHow Not To Be An A**holeâ. It has practical life lessons on how to communicate better and show empathy.
